Well that was 2 million well spent!
Associated Press has just reported that the Sea Shepherd organization declared “whale war” on the Japanese fleet after the Ady Gil, a fibre-glass trimaran which holds the world record for the fastest ever global circumnavigation, was seriously damaged in a collision with the whaling ship, Shonan Maru II.
Anyone who sees the footage and is aware of the reputation this motor boat on steroids has for speed is that they could easily have maneuvered out of the way of the Japanese Whaler.
See the following article: http://theportcitypost.com/2009/11/10/earthrace-joins-sea-shepherd-in-whale-wars/
“The Japanese whalers have now escalated this conflict very violently,” said Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd and captain of its flagship, the Steve Irwin. “If they think that our remaining two ships will retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the face of their extremism, they will be mistaken. We have a real whale war on our hands now and we have no intention of retreating.”
Sea Shepherd justifies its actions by claiming that the Japanese are themselves breaking the law by hunting endangered whales. Whaling has been banned under an international moratorium since 1986, but the Japanese fleet carries out its hunt in the name of “scientific research”, which anti-whaling activists and governments dismiss as a cynical pretext.
O.K. so two wrongs do make a right!!!
